The land of Portugal has diversity. Coimbra was the capital of Portugal from 1139 to 1260. Today, it is the principal city of Central Portugal. The chief seat of learning in Portugal is the University of Coimbra. It is positioned on top of a hill that governs the city beneath and is one of Central Portugal's main tourist attractions. The university itself has a stunning Baroque Chapel; in excess of 300,000 historical books are residing in the Library, furthermore its ceiling is covered in complex decorations. and some of the most beautiful gardens in Europe are here, of note are the 18th century Botanical gardens.

Coimbra was an important area of the Aeminium in Roman times. There is still an aqueduct and cryptoporticus remaining from that era. Nearby is the ancient city of Conimbriga which possesses some of the best preserved Roman ruins in Europe. More than Roman history, Coimbra has a good quality collection of museums i.e. the City Museum and the Museo Nacional Machado de Castro, which is looked upon as the most significant in Portugal.

Meandering along Central Portugal like a snake is the impressive River Mondego. Coimbra is where the river is at its most striking after its voyage through the villages, towns and mountains. Visitors can bask its energy by ferry, canoe or at one of the numerous and varied cafes and restaurants along its banks.

The hospitality, warmth and friendliness of the Portugese citizens is famous. It is especially the situation in Central Portugal. At the start the language can seem unmanageable and challenging but yet making the effort of learning the basics and trying to talk to locals in their own tongue will make you many more smiles and very often lead to a free glass of home made wine or port.

The Portuguese populace have a long history of being migrant workers with an average of 30% of the country's native people being abroad working at any one time.
